Brooke’s Top 5 Local Beaches

Where we go to relax by the lakeshore — 5 Favorite West Michigan Beaches From A Local

Summer in Saugatuck has a way of sneaking up on us. One minute the lake is frozen and still, then before we know it, beach days are back on the calendar! With warmer months just around the corner, there’s no better time to start dreaming about some sandy toes, lakeshore sunsets, and long days by the water. We’ve spent the week enjoying the rare winter sunshine and looking forward to summertime here in Saugatuck! As a local who has spent the majority of her life along West Michigan’s lakeshore, our summer-loving employee Brooke knows the area’s best beaches inside and out. The following list includes her top five local favorites— each offering its own reason to slow down, soak in the sun, and enjoy everything that summer along the Lake Michigan shoreline has to offer. Be sure to take Brooke’s advice and check out these beautiful local beaches on your next summer trip to Saugatuck!

  1. Saugatuck Dunes State Park (Saugatuck) - Best Nature Walk

If you love turning your beach day into an adventure, this is Brooke’s go-to. The walk through the woods and the dunes make arriving at the shoreline feel earned, in the best possible way. It’s especially great for nature lovers and anyone bringing their dog along for the day. You can park for free near the Felt Mansion, or use the main entrance with a Michigan State Park pass. It’s a beautiful and peaceful way to experience Lake Michigan.

  2. West Side County Park (Fennville) - Best Option for Groups & Parties

Smaller and often less crowded, West Side County Park is perfect for a relaxed beach afternoon. With a playground, gazebos for gatherings, and bathrooms close by, it’s an easy choice for family hang-outs. Brooke also loves it for rock hunting along the shoreline—there’s always something interesting to find. Bonus: it’s completely free to visit!

  3. Pier Cove (Fennville) - Best Hidden Gem

Pier Cove is one of those secret little spots locals love for its simplicity. The beach is small and typically less packed, making it ideal for a quiet morning or sunset visit. Parking is free but very limited, so arriving early is a good idea. There’s additional roadside parking nearby, but prepare for a walk. If you’re looking for calm and unfussy beach vibes — this one’s a hidden gem.

  4. Oval Beach (Saugatuck) - Classic Must-Visit

Oval Beach is a must-visit and one of the most iconic beaches in the area. Just minutes from downtown, it’s easy to pair with shopping and dinner in nearby Saugatuck or Douglas. Climb Mt. Baldhead for sweeping views, stroll out toward the pier, or settle in for a full day by the water. It’s lively, scenic, and quintessentially Saugatuck.

  5. Tunnel Park (Holland) - Worth the Short Drive for Families

A bit of a drive from Saugatuck, but Brooke says it’s absolutely worth it—especially for families. Tunnel Park offers a playground, volleyball courts, gazebos, and convenient bathrooms, making it easy to lay the whole day away in the sun. The walk to the shore is shorter than at Holland State Park, which makes it more accessible while still offering beautiful Lake Michigan views, earning this Holland beach a spot in Brooke’s top 5.
